Beyond Manila's well-documented underground, Cebu City is quietly building one of Southeast Asia's most distinctive electronic music cultures.
For years, Manila has dominated conversations about Philippine club culture. But 570 kilometers south, Cebu City is building something that may ultimately rival its northern counterpart for sheer creativity and community.
The Cebu scene is characterized by a DIY spirit that even Manila's underground sometimes lacks. Events happen in warehouses, on rooftops, in converted factories. The focus is always on the music.
"In Cebu, there's no VIP mentality," explains local promoter and DJ Deeco. "People come to dance. That's it. And that creates something really special."
